Been awhile...UPDATE

Even though no one reads my blog....yet... I am sorry it has been so long since my last entry.  I finally found a job that has 2 out the 3 major requirements I was hoping my next job would fill. Requirement 1) That my past experiences will provide me with a comfortable base knowledge so that I can be confident in my new role. Requirement 2) That I believe this new job will provide me with new knowledge and skills that will be valuable to my career. An last not but not least 3) that it is then field of sustainability. Alas this last requirement was the one not met. I'll admit I've gotten a bit of track, but hey it's a job and it certainly meets the first two requirements.  To stay connected to my field however I will blog about sustainability since I often read stories that captivate my interest whenever I have the chance at the office. This is my new years resolution! err.... New Year Resolution - Q1 hehe :)

Ellen Weinreb's interview with CSR International

Just watched http://www.csrinternational.org/?p=9395 An interview with Ellen Weinreb about sustainability jobs and feel slightly discouraged afterwards.  She mentioned that graduates are getting jobs in the public sector and at startups but I find that even these kind of places are looking for somebody with at least 5 years experience at the manager level to step in an make sustainability happen for thier company.  I've done internships and have been in school for the past 4 years how am I, as a graduate, supposed to have all this amazing experience? Today I applied for two jobs, both of which had manager somewhere in the title, because I have nothing to loose.  Alot of my experience through my internships does, I believe, make me a good candidate for each job but it's the lack of experience that gets me overlooked everytime.  I just need somebody to take a chance on me so Im going to have to find (free) events that sustainability professionals attend so that I can network.  In the meantime still trying to atleast land a server/bartender job which is also more difficult than I anticipated. Crossing my fingers*

First Blog Everr

So I've never blogged before but I'm going to start documenting my efforts in getting a job in this wretched economy.  I graduated in May from Arizona State University's College of Sustainability with a bachelor's degree in sustainability with a focus is renewable technologies, and materials.  I also had a related focus area in environmental design.  Many people have asked me, "So....what is your dream job then?".  To be honest ANY job right now would be appreciated.  I have fun learning and branching into all areas of sustainability.  I would say though that when I think about a dream job it has to do with green building. I'd love to get some experience with LEED building since I'm currently studying for the Green Associate exam.  There's not too much biulding going on in general which is really a bummer. It would be awesome to be a tangible part of sustainability. My goal is to someday drive by a LEED Platinum building and say "I was a part of that, I helped build that." Since I have graduated I have had difficulty finding sustainability jobs that aren't senior level, or atleast require 5 years of experience.  Im trying to find a part time job so I can start paying off student loans until I do find a real carrer opportunity. It's depressing and hard and time consuming but this blog will be part of my motivation in landing a job. I hope sooner rather than later...
